Nuclear Engineering Faculty Position
Virginia Commonwealth University
Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering

The Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position open to all ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor) in support of our nuclear engineering undergraduate and graduate programs.

Position: Applications are being sought for a tenure-track faculty position open to all ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor). The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering is the largest department in VCU's School of Engineering, with total undergraduate and graduate enrollments of approximately 550 and 100 students, respectively (with about 100 nuclear engineering major concentration undergraduates). The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering offers an ABET accredited BS in Mechanical Engineering with a separately ABET accredited Major Concentration in Nuclear Engineering, and MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. VCU is currently the only university in Virginia offering a full suite of undergraduate and graduate degrees in nuclear engineering. The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering currently has 25 full-time faculty with research areas that largely focus on functional materials, energy, nuclear engineering, and medicine.

Virginia Commonwealth University, one of the nation's top urban research universities, is located on two campuses in the thriving city of Richmond. VCU is proud to have a diverse student population that includes traditionally underrepresented minorities and a higher than average female student population. The School of Engineering, which enrolled its first class of students in 1996, has outstanding state-of-the-art instructional and research facilities and offers MS and PhD degrees, as well as ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Life Science Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering.

Qualifications: Applicants should possess a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related discipline and demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in nuclear engineering. While candidates with experience in all areas of nuclear engineering will be considered (reactor theory; radiation detection, transport, imaging and measurement; thermal hydraulics; nuclear safety; nuclear medicine; probabilistic risk analysis; nuclear fuel cycle; nuclear security and non-proliferation; etc.), applicants with experience in nuclear thermal hydraulics are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and have an outstanding publication record. Junior candidates will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as a potential for scholarship to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. Candidates for a more senior rank will be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. Particularly attractive is experience that demonstrates an ability to initiate interdisciplinary research and educational synergies among diverse areas. Collaborations are encouraged with other VCU units such as the Medical Campus, the Schools of Business and the Arts, and the College of Humanities and Sciences. The School of Engineering at VCU supports a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment. The candidate will demonstrate experience that shows their commitment to fostering such an environment.
